When it comes to vacuum sealer models, there is no shortage of choice. In many ways, the number of options is a great thing. However, it can also be challenging, simply because so many of the models end up being similar.

That issue is particularly true for FoodSaver as the brand produces a large range of different models and in some cases, these are even difficult to tell apart. The FoodSaver V4880 is one example of this pattern.

At face value, this model is appealing and might be a good choice for people wanting many options with their vacuum sealer. However, the style isn’t that uncommon for FoodSaver and there are a number of other similar choices out there. So, what is it that makes this particular model interesting?

Standard Features

Despite the many models and multiple styles, vacuum sealers tend to work in the same general way. In particular, they remove the air out of a bag and then seal it in some way.

With external models, like this one here, only one side of the bag goes into the machine. The vacuum then works from there and pulls air out. Once the air has been removed, the bag is then sealed.

For the most part, the process works effectively and can be powerful. In fact, people often use vacuum sealers to save money and make food last much longer.

However, it is worth noting that like other external vacuum sealers, this model doesn’t work so well with liquids or moist food. This is associated with the general approach.

In particular, the vacuum pulls liquid toward the area that is being sealed. Often this will prevent a good seal from being formed. Still, this isn’t a unique challenge and you can get around it by partially freezing any food before you try to seal it.

Extra Features

The FoodSaver V4880 is one of the more advanced models from FoodSaver and, as a consequence, it has a range of extra features. For example, there is a moist and dry aspect, which will affect the strength of the seal, allowing you to create a stronger seal for moist foods. The vacuum sealer actually detects the moisture in food automatically, so you don’t have to pick a specific setting.

Additionally, the model also follows the 2-in-1 style. This means that there is a retractable handheld vacuum sealer as part of the model.

To a degree, that sealer works in a similar way to the accessory hose that many other models have and allows you to seal different types of containers. This includes canning jars if you have the right accessory.

However, the handheld sealer also has some specific advantages. In particular, it can be used to seal zip lock bags. The vacuum sealer does also have a rapid marinate mode, which can be a way to quickly marinate meat.

The one other feature worth noting is the ability to pulse vacuum. Essentially, this is a function that lets you control the vacuum yourself, rather than rely on automation. This is a major advantage because it makes it easier to seal delicate food without crushing it in the process.

Additionally, the pulse feature gets around some of the issues that typically come with automatic vacuum sealers. For example, many such vacuum sealers have no manual capability at all and rely entirely on the sensor. This means that if the sensor stops working for any reason, the vacuum sealer is useless.

In contrast, the pulse option gives you manual control, which should theoretically work even if the automatic component stopped for any reason.

User Experience

User experience for this model is extremely positive. Almost everybody has found that the model works well and they haven’t had any significant issues.

One of the relatively few complaints is that it’s hard to see where the end of the bag is inside the machine. This makes it harder to line the bag up and get a good seal.

However, the issue is common in many different models and most brands don’t offer a solution to this particular problem. Besides, once you got used to the machine, you would learn where to place the bag without issue.

The one other problem is simply the unit not working. There aren’t many people with this issue, which suggests that it is a case of defective machines. While this may be frustrating, it is something that will happen regardless of the brand you choose.

Those issues aside, the balance of reviews is overwhelmingly positive. This suggests that this is one of the more reliable vacuum sealers on the market.

Comparing The FoodSaver V4880 To Other Vacuum Sealers

As I mentioned previously, the FoodSaver V4880 is very similar to other models that FoodSaver offers. For example, the FoodSaver V4980 is almost identical, which isn’t too surprising when you consider the model numbers.

In fact, the two machines have the same visual appearance. For that matter, it isn’t entirely clear what the difference between the V4880 and V4980 is, as both have a pulse function.

Beyond this, there are also other similar machines. For example, the FoodSaver V4440 is an extremely popular model and this also has the same basic design and 2-in-1 component.

One more unusual alternative is the FoodSaver FM2435-ECR. This model still has the handheld sealer but it is designed like a basic inexpensive vacuum sealer. As a result, the FM2435-ECR can be a good option for people who want a smaller machine and those that don’t need all of the features that the FoodSaver V4880 offers.

Who Is The FoodSaver V4880 Best For?

The FoodSaver V4880 is best suited for people who vacuum seal regularly and want significant flexibility. Models like this a great for that audience because there really is so much that you can do with the vacuum sealer.

The most distinctive thing about this model would be the pulse function, so it may be a good choice if you want more control over the vacuum process. However, it would also be worth considering the FoodSaver 4980, simply because the two models are so similar to one another.

If you do specifically want the extra control that comes with being able to pulse the vacuum, then either of these two models could work well.

Still, if that aspect doesn’t interest you, it may be worth looking at an option like the FoodSaver V4440 because that one does also get a large number of positive reviews and has similar features.
