Vacuum sealers range in price and in features considerably, especially when you include options like external and chamber models. However, this particular model a handheld one, which tends to make it portable. At the same time, it is probably the cheapest vacuum sealer that you can find anywhere on the market.

At the same time, this vacuum sealer is unusual because it is an ‘As Seen on TV’ product. Some of those products can work well, I’m sure. However, many tend towards being gimmicky and ineffective.

So, how does this vacuum sealer stand up against other brands and styles?

Standard Features

Regardless of the model or type that you choose, the general concept of vacuum sealing remains consistent. Basically, the machine removes air from bags and then prevents it from reentering.

As the marketing for this product indicates, the process can help prevent freezer burn and ‘seal in freshness’. Additionally, vacuum sealing is commonly used as a way of preserving food and making it last much longer than it would otherwise.

Extra Features

This model is a handheld vacuum sealer, so it is specifically designed to be portable and easy to use. With that in mind, it won’t have the strength or range of functions that you get with an external or a chamber vacuum sealer.

Additionally, the design operates by withdrawing air through valves in bags. These valves are one way, so the air shouldn’t be able to get back in. While this design does work, the resulting seal is never as strong as a bag that is completely sealed via heat (like with external vacuum sealers).

Of course, the catch is that you can only use bags with those valves in them. Likewise, you cannot control the size of the bags. The model is specifically designed to be used with branded bags but you may be able to some other options, such as similar bags from FoodSaver.

In this case, the vacuum sealer itself is electric and it runs on six AA batteries. There is no way to recharge it directly, so you just have to rely on batteries.

There aren’t any extra features on offer with this model but then again, additional features aren’t really needed.

User Experience

The user experience for this model is better than I would expect but it isn’t overwhelmingly great either. For example, the average on Amazon is 3.9 stars and only around half of all reviewers give it the best possible rating.

One common problem seems to be that the vacuum sealer simply doesn’t last long. So, you might find that the device works for a year or so but probably not much longer than that.

But, even with those issues, there is still a considerable number of positive reviews, with people often finding that it works fine. Besides that, inexpensive models often don’t last very long and it’s unrealistic to expect them to do so.

Comparing The Debbie Meyers GeniusVac To Other Vacuum Sealers

This particular model is a relatively common style for handheld vacuum sealers. Basically, what you see is what you get, so there is no charger or anything like that. Instead, the vacuum sealer runs off batteries.

There are other similar models that do this, with one example being the PackMate 95000. However, most of the options that I’ve found don’t fare particularly well in reviews and the Debbie Meyers option actually ends up being a better choice.

Alternatively, there are other models where you recharge the vacuum sealer. Two of these come from FoodSaver and the best reviews are associated with the FoodSaver FSFRSH0055.

In many ways, the FoodSaver option is better, even though the model costs more. This isn’t just because of the reviews either. Instead, FoodSaver has a long history behind it and the model is compatible with many of the other products and accessories that the brand offers.

Besides, to be honest, the FoodSaver model just looks better overall and the charging dock does make it easy to keep on hand in your kitchen.

Of course, you don’t have to stick to handheld vacuum sealers. There are many external models that can be a great choice, even if your budget is limited. For example, something like the FoodSaver V2244 can be appealing if you’re looking for something simple and reliable.

Who Is The Debbie Meyers GeniusVac Best For?

This vacuum sealer is a fairly basic model, so it’s not going to work well for large amounts of vacuum sealing. Indeed, how long the device lasts would probably depend on how frequently you used it.

At the same time, the individual bags tend to be more expensive than the bag rolls that you can use with external vacuum sealers. Likewise, you have less flexibility, as you cannot create smaller bags. All of these factors mean that the vacuum sealer will only work well if you plan to use it infrequently.

The vacuum sealer may also be great for people who aren’t near a power outlet for any reason, such as camping or doing a road trip. In those situations, a device like this could make storing food easier and a conventional vacuum sealer simply wouldn’t be an option.

Whether or not you should get the Debbie Meyers GeniusVac really depends on what you’re looking for. As the reviews suggest, the device isn’t likely to be extremely effective in the long-term, especially not if you’re doing a large amount of vacuum sealing.

But, then again, that’s hardly surprising. After all, the device is a budget handheld vacuum sealer and is certainly never going to be as reliable as a $200 FoodSaver model on your countertop.

So, if you’re specifically looking for an inexpensive handheld model, then this particular model is one useful choice that may work well.

Unusually, this model manages to be the cheapest option but it also fares well when it comes to reviews. Granted, it doesn’t sell as well as alternatives like the FoodSaver FSFRSH0051 and doesn’t get reviews as good as the AIDOUT vacuum sealer. But, even then, it’s hard to walk past the Debbie Meyers GeniusVac simply because of the balance of price and reviews.
